Garlic (Allium sativum L.) and Sabal Palm (Sabal palmetto (Walter) Lodd. ex Schult. & Schult. f.)

I love this shot, everytime I take it. A mature stand of Sabal Palms (more scientifically classified as 'cabbage palmettos'). Mixed in with the palms are some large banana trees (Musa ×paradisiaca L. (pro sp.) [acuminata × balbisiana]).

The scientific 'common' name for these 'bananas' is 'French plantain.'

The Sabal Palm is Florida's state tree and misidentified by the state and locals, often.

Its classification is as follows:

Kingdom
Plantae – Plants

Subkingdom
Tracheobionta – Vascular plants

Superdivision
Spermatophyta – Seed plants

Division
Magnoliophyta – Flowering plants

Class
Liliopsida – Monocotyledons

Subclass
Arecidae

Order
Arecales

Family
Arecaceae – Palm family

Genus
Sabal Adans. – palmetto

Species
Sabal palmetto (Walter) Lodd. ex Schult. & Schult. f. – cabbage palmetto

IN OTHER GARDEN NEWS:

Despite being over the heat and humidity, I planted a case of cultivated garlic (Allium sativum L.) on Sunday.

In Central Florida we can grow garlic, onions, broccoli and 'greens,' all winter.

The garlic came from China. I imagine it had been in that box for a very long time.

A row of garlic. . . pointy side up. . .flat side down. These bulbs should sprout in a few days as the heat/humidity of summer continue. We are high 80s to low 90s most days, with ample humidity in the 70-80% range.
