Checkered Skipper Moth, Pyrgus communis

This was one of the first days in a month when it was overcast and drizzly. . .which brought out some of the more exotic moths that live on our sandhill. This is a Checkered Skipper Moth which feeds mainly on Mallow family plants (see previous posts). We normally wouldn't see these guys unless we were out very early in the morning or late in the evening; prime biting flies and mosquito time.

I followed this one for awhile. . . as he looked for a mate. This was definitely a male. . .with the long purple-blue hair. Above he's on a lantana. Below he's on some Spanish Needles.
