Cesear-weed, October-flower

ABOVE: I found a couple of good examples of Cesar-weed (Urena lobata L.) on my walk this evening. This is one tough plant. . .thriving in the heat and dry of this miserable Fall. I collected some seeds of this Mallow Family plant (Malvaceae) in hopes of getting it started in my gardens. Anything that can survive and look as lovely as this. . .surely is desirable in the Florida garden. This specimen was about 7 feet tall.

BELOW: I found several examples of this native buckwheat family herb (Polygonaceae). It looks so delicate and yet it is so tough to be blooming today. Old Floridians called this "October-flower." Other Southerners refer to it as "Jointweed." Its Latin name is daunting: Polygonella polygama (Ventenat) Englemann and Gray.
