Sunflowers

We have some late October sunflowers blooming despite the wicked heat and dry.

These have been heavily irrigated and still they are quite short; 5' or shorter.

Several specimen have many, many heads, which makes them kind of interesting.

BELOW: This afternoon I stumbled upon these native sunflowers that have somehow managed to grow and bloom despite the many weeks of dry heat. These are Helianthus floridanus.

I was walking along the East Coast Railroad tracks this afternoon and I came upon this stand down in a ditch. They were some of the few flowers I found on my long walk this afternoon.

The ditches on either side of the tracks were completely dry.
