New Years Day Photos

Above: A red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) hunting in the dry lake area.

The wild weather of December 2010 made for some interesting photos. We had three sub-freezing events in December which have left most of the landscape brown and dead, including all but the hardiest of the native palm trees. There was no measurable rain in December 2010 so the lakes continue to dry. . . leaving only puddles where the birds are feasting on the remaining fish. December's cold quickly changed into balmy 80°s F. today and the return of stuffy, humid conditions.

Last week's freezing weather created some interesting ice that we normally don't see at this latitude. Above and below are frozen pond bubbles.

Below: A frozen lily pad.

Below: Some ice sculptures formed by flowing water freezing.

Below: Sunset over the river. It looks like Fall with the leaves suddenly gone from the Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) trees. All of the Golden Rain trees (Koelreuteria paniculata) also froze last week and dropped almost all their leaves yesterday and today when the temperatures reached 80° F. It was an interesting phenomenon that I'd never witnessed before.

Below: A Reddish Egret (Egretta rufescens) cleaning out one of the puddles that was once a lake.
