Poppies

Where there has been some irrigation there are some interesting flowers that thrive in the otherwise miserable heat and sun. Today was a steady 96° F. (35.5° C.). For the month of May we've had less than 1/2" of rain (12.70 mm) with temperatures constantly daily in the 90s.

While I'm not certain I believe these to be Papaver somniferum (opium poppies).

They're considered a weed in the USA and will not likely grow to fruition in this weather. They just somehow were present where there was some moisture from some sprinklers. I liked the effect of the sun in the background which makes the flowers appear quite other-worldly.

I had a blood lily bloom today. . . and some stripped lilies of unknown origin. These things are popping up wherever they are getting ample water from irrigation. Meanwhile some of my pumpkins burned up in the mid-day sun. I try to water them daily but had missed a few. . . and so it goes.

Below: A cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) all puffy in the spray of a sprinkler.
