MAJOR WINTER STORMS
POUND THE NORTHWEST

While a series of major winter storms pound the Pacific Northwest. . . we're flirting with 80° F (27° C) high temperatures and dry weather in Central Florida.  The latest "cold" front that pushed through yesterday brought only cool weather and no rain to the east side of the parched peninsula.

Meanwhile in the Northwest the ferocious winter storms pounding the coast from San Francisco to Seattle show no signs of abating until at least next Wednesday.  The storms are bringing heavy snow, flooding rains, and winds near hurricane force over coastal waters.

Tacoma, Washington snow

The Seattle area received 3-5 inches yesterday . . . the heaviest snows fell just north of Portland Oregon, where Toutle, Washington received 18 inches as of 6:00 am PST.  The storm also brought 2 inches of snow to Portland yesterday evening.  The wet, heavy snow brought down numerous trees and power lines.

Very heavy snows of 1-3 feet have fallen in the Cascade Mountains east of Seattle, causing extreme avalanche danger.  Further east, in Yellowstone National Park, 2 feet of snow are forecast to fall by the weekend.

An atmospheric river of moisture extends all the way to Hawaii.  This moisture will continue to stream ashore in the coming days.

Mount Vernon, Washington

A flood watch has been issued for the Portland area with near 100% chance of rain, daily, through next Wednesday with temperatures in the mid-40°s (8° C).

A cold rain is also forecast to fall across Idaho for the foreseeable future with temperatures in the mid-40°s in Boise.

At higher elevations winter storm warning are in effect through most of southwestern Montana where roads are expected to be snow-covered and icy creating hazardous travel conditions.

A dusting of snow on the ground in Lebanon, Wisconsin should be augmented this week.
This snow will likely melt in El Dorado Springs, Missouri as temperatures climb into the mid 50°s F ( 13° C) this weekend.

The storms will continue their march east, across the continent. . .but will be staying far to the north as a strong jet stream maintains a zonal flow across the continent. . . with the coldest air bottled up over Canada and springtime-like warmth across the southern tier of states.  Even as far north as Atlanta, the weekend high temperatures are forecast to be in the 70°s F (21° C).

Sanibel Island, Florida

Florida -- which could use the rain -- is going to experience daily temperatures around 80° (27° C) through next week with little to no chance of rainfall.
