Garden Construction, Steps; Broom Sedge

Most of this very warm first weekend of 2009 was spent building steps from house to gazebo. . .and trying to get the steps perfectly level, plumb and proportional to the hill. We did find time to go for a hike through the swamp near the St. Johns River, and came upon this stand of Broom Sedge (Andropogon glomeratus Walt.) pictured above.

The strong feathery culms, or flower stalks, of this perennial grass (not a sedge, despite the common name) may be 6' tall and were once used to make brooms. Twelve other, somewhat similar species of Andropogon can be found in our area.

Below, the steps, finally in place. Concrete to follow some day soon.

Below, looking sideways at the steps. . .with all the crap I dug out of the hill today. I've already removed a truck load of lumber. . .this was a surprise (many concrete blocks and more lumber).

Below, another shot in the swamp, surrounded by Pinus palustris (Long Leaf Pine).

It was uncomfortably hot all weekend. . .and to be hotter tomorrow (NOAA is forecasting 83 degrees). This is the beginning of a La Nina event.
