Pineapple, Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.

Above is one of our many wild pineapple plants, Ananas comosus (L.) Merr., one species that we will not have to worry about this week with the cool weather that is forecast for the 14th, 15th and 16th January. The pineapple are very hardy.

Close up of mango bloom, above.

Conversely, the blooming mangos (Mangifera indica L.) are going to be very succeptible to damage from the cold weather. The many blooms pictured below are up about 20' on the tree. The only hope for the tree is a north wind which has about a 2 mile fetch across Lake Theresa. The hope being that the water is warm enough to keep the breeze slightly above freezing.

The mango's desire to bloom in January. . .and our occasional freezing weather in January. . .are why we rarely get much fruit from the mango at this latitude.
