Sunflowers, Gopher Tortoise and other visitors

Sunflowers are doing great. The current weather. . . extremely hot and stable (no wind). . . is good for these 6-foot specimens. I water them from below every morning and evening.

I love the close ups of the bees. I get very close and have not been bitten. . . yet. . .this year.

More close ups.

Tad, our gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus), is finally back out of his burrow. I had not seen him since last winter. . .until this week. His burrow is directly under the western gate. . .not a great place. . .but apparently stable enough. He is an herbivore and travels about 100-feet from his burrow to graze morning and evening. This shot from about 10:00 this morning. He'll be back around 6:00 this evening.

We had a brief overnight visit from Scot, who stood in front of the sunflowers for scale. He's off to Miami, Jamaica, the Caymans and Mexico.
