Camphor Weed, Pluchea odorata (L.) Cassini

This robust annual has sprouted near the lakeshore where the new neighbors cut down all the brush. They accidentally? Otherwise? Cut into our property and these plants are emerging and blooming along with a field of ginger that I had planted in that spot.

The leaves are 5-12 cm long and more or less suculent. The pale rose rayless flower heads are in compact terminal clusters. The leaves are both rank-smelling and sessile (emerging directly from the stem of the plant).

I'm going to inspect more closely this afternoon as this could be Pluchea rosea (Godfrey). I'll have to taste one of the leaves to be sure. I'll also try and get a better shot of the plant for identification. This one from the USDA is washed out compared to its appearance.

We're excited to have some rain. . . a little apprehensive that it may turn into T.S. #1 of 2009. . .either way. . .its an on and off again rain with wind today.
