Hidden Creatures

In each of these images there are creatures virtually hidden with clever camouflage evolved from eons of survival by those fittest to avoid predation.

A Gulf fritillary (Agraulis vanillae) virtually disappears into these Tithonia spp. The Tithonia are spectacular.

From another angle the fritillary is more visible. They get drunk on the nectar of these flowers referred to locally as 'Mexican Sunflowers.' Mid-afternoon the butterfly move to the side yard or up the road to the mailboxes and lay their eggs on the passion flower (Passiflora) vines.

This stink bug (Pentatomidae) is only visible because it has stumbled upon this zinnia seed pod. Were he sporting his brown coat he would have been virtually invisible.

At top right a sunflower glass lynx spider (aka Green Lynx Spider, Peucetia viridans) is hard to find in this image. When threatened he moved to the back of the flower (see image below).

The more accurate description of this creature is Peucetia viridans or the Green Lynx Spider. The lynx-spiders are so called because some species chase their prey with great rapidity over foliage of trees and shrubs; they even jump from branch to branch; but some variants. . . like these guys so persistent on our zinnia and sunflower. . . stake claim to individual flowers then lie in wait for days or weeks near flowers and spring upon insects that visit their individual flowers.

I'll be able to go out and find this particular spider for another week or until I remove the head of this sunflower. . .at which time he'll move on to a fresher bloom.

Peucetia is from a mythological proper name, Peucetios, one of the 50 sons of Lycaon. Viridans = green.

This Southern Leopard Frog, (Rana sphenocephala utricularia), blends perfectly into the pond plants. I once thought this guy was all alone. . .there are many small frog friends in the pond now so I'm sure he has a mate around. This specie's native habitat is swamp. I believe he traveled over from the Deltona properties on some of the pond plants as we are far from any swamp atop a sandhill in Debary.

Honeybees are all around the face of this sunflower. They are the same color as the florets and thus very hard to see. This particular flower is just now blooming. It sprung up in one of the pots of mystery seeds from Brazil. . .and I let it go. It is about 7' tall.

In this image you can make out the spiral of seed placement. . .A model for the pattern of florets in the head of a sunflower was proposed by H Vogel in 1979. Click on side link for more on this and the golden ratio related to sunflower seed placement.

That's Dell-Roy Jackson's tail disappearing into a field of zinnia. Dell-Roy remains homeless. . . living on the front porch.  (Update:  Dell-Roy moved inside and is a fat, happy cat now).  His sister, Wilhelmina  "Will" still lives on the porches as she refuses to be domesticated.

"DJ" as we're calling him for short. . . helped me do some harvesting of zinnia seed this morning. I'm going to start another field of flower in the backyard. . .next rainy day.

Through 10 Seasons Bigg Boss, an Indian (Hindi-language) version of a TV reality show broadcast on the Colors channel in India, follows the Big Brother format.  We can tell you Jason did not win Season 10.  He walked on day 55. The Season ended after 105 days on January 28, 2017, however, Jason did make an impression, and perhaps his appearance will revitalize his Bollywood career.  If not, he obviously has other avenues he can pursue.

Trump Week 1.  Whatever else you can say about the liar-in-chief, and there is plenty to say, he has inspired a movement of progressives that hasn't been seen in years.  What started as a gritty protest by a former Badlands National Park Service employee who wanted to give Trump a piece of his mind exploded into a Twitter movement in support of climate change science.
