Historic October Rains for Florida

Historically Florida begins its dry season in October and the long dry lasts until the following June. This October has been exceptional -- in places -- as almost 17.00 inches (431 mm) have already fallen on parts of the central peninsula.

Yeehaw Junction recorded the heaviest rainfall during the October 7-10 unnamed sub-tropical weather event. 16.79" (426.46 mm) fell at one of the Yeehaw Junction recording stations.

Closer to home the highest rain total was at Cape Canaveral, which received 9.94" (252.47 mm) . . . which unfortunately did us no good as most of that rainfall is in a watershed that quickly drains into the Atlantic Ocean or the Indian River Lagoon.

Officially we received 7.33" (186.18 mm) which quickly soaked into the very dry ground.

We're hoping to receive more from the next unnamed tropical system that is forecast to cross the peninsula tonight through Wednesday (forecast graphics below).

The combination of a cold front dropping south and the tropical low moving north should limit strengthening of this system, but it will bring another bout of needed rainfall as we enter the dry season in a year that was exceptionally dry and is forecast to continue drier than normal (due to La Niña).

Read more about the strengthening La Niña at the National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center.

The complete list of official rainfall amounts as recorded by NOAA (for the Oct. 7-10 event) follows. I've highlighted in red the stations that record rainfall that directly impacts the east central part of the Florida peninsula.
